Why The Pioneer School?

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”

-        Robert Heinlein, Time Enough for Love

Who Attends The Pioneer School?

Students in grades 6 through 8 seeking a challenging curriculum so that they may prepare to seamlessly enter the high school program of their choice whether it is homeschool, one of the county’s diverse career academies, or a selective and competitive high school academic program.

Students seeking education beyond academics to foster their leadership skills, citizenship, emotional intelligence, social conscience, intellectual courage, technology skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and practical life skills.

Students who respect the personal beliefs and convictions of others.

Students who thrive in a smaller, more nurturing, and holistic learning environment that provides a ‘softer’ social transition between elementary and high school.

What does Pioneer School Teach?

The Pioneer School facilitates students achieving academic excellence in rigorous online and live-taught curricula provided by Florida Virtual School, TCI, The Institute for Excellence in Writing, Math U See, Saxon, Making Math Meaningful, and The Big History Project, led by experienced teachers. Using a blended learning approach, students’ educational paths are tailored to meet their current and future academic goals.

The Pioneer School enriches students’ classroom education by offering various programs including conversational Spanish, ‘Human Skills,’ drama, ‘Brain Hour,’ 4-H Club, archery, music, coding, ASL, physical fitness and cooking, public speaking, environmental and conservation studies, community service work, Odyssey of the Mind, art, and handwork.
